Salem I. Noureldine, MD, is an Endocrine Surgeon at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He focuses on the treatment of benign, functional, and malignant disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as neuroendocrine tumors.
Dr. Noureldine received his medical degree from Aleppo University Faculty of Medicine. Prior to his surgical training, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Endocrine Surgery both at Tulane University and Johns Hopkins University. There he was exposed to pioneers in the field of endocrine surgery, who fostered Dr. Noureldine’s interest in the complex management of endocrine pathology. During his time there, Dr. Noureldine investigated the role of diagnostic and prognostic molecular markers for thyroid cancer, the effect of targeted therapies in poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma, noninvasive ablative techniques of thyroid tumors, atypical presentations of hyperparathyroidism, and participated in outcomes studies aimed at improving care for patients with thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal pathology. Dr. Noureldine then completed his surgical training with distinction at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Dr. Noureldine then completed his fellowship training in Endocrine Surgery at the Department of Endocrine surgery at the Cleveland Clinic and practiced at the Endocrine and Metabolism Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio prior to returning to DC. He offers both conventional and minimally invasive options to include robotic surgery and radiofrequency ablation when appropriate. He has always had a particular interest in the study and application of disruptive noninvasive and emerging technologies such as “scarless” robotic surgery, thermal ablation of benign and malignant thyroid nodules, and fluorescence guided surgery.
Dr. Noureldine is an accomplished and expert academic endocrine surgeon, having authored thyroid cancer guidelines from the American Thyroid Association, over 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers, multiple textbook chapters, and served as an editor for several textbooks and review series. He has presented his research at numerous national and international scientific meetings. His work, which has been cited upwards of 2,600 times by the scientific society, on molecular markers, improving surgical outcomes, management of hyperparathyroidism, and exploring novel ablative techniques of endocrine pathologies has helped the medical field tailor and personalize treatment for patients with these conditions.
Dr. Noureldine is both fellowship-trained in Endocrine Surgery and board-certified in General Surgery. His practice is located at the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates as well as the Virginia Hospital Center Health System.
He is a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES), the American Thyroid Association (ATA), and the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS). He has served on the guidelines & emerging therapeutics committee for the AAES and AHNS and on the surgical affairs committee for the ATA and continues to be actively involved with these organizations.
